We’re often asked by customers if we do any of the many crafts featured on the George Weil website. And yes we do! This still life was painted by our colleague Allison using Daler Rowney System 3 Acrylics on Canvas Board. She chose a limited palette of Burnt Umber, Yellow Ochre, Ultramarine, White.
“I chose to keep the number of colours to a minimum so that I could practise mixing my colours. The off-white was surprisingly difficult to achieve, too much white and Ochre and I had a creamy colour, too much Burnt Umber and I ended up with a muddy brown.”
“Ultramarine and/or Burnt Umber System 3 Acrylics were used to darken the colours, making shading less harsh than if I had used black.”
“I did apply the paint quite thinly in some places, diluting the acrylic with a little water. (Diluting the paint too much can impact on the performance of the binder to keep the pigment “glued” to the canvas). It helped to use a dry brush to remove excess paint and to blend for shading.”
“I found it easier to apply the lighter colours first and then add the shading. I used Titanium White mixed with a little Ochre and Burnt Umber to attain highlights. Titanium White is more opaque than other whites. It is ideal for blocking out mistakes.”
“I’m really pleased with the painting (only my 3rd since I left school in 1982!). I haven’t used oils yet and look forward to experimenting with them in the future.”
