A selection of books about hand paper making and paper crafts. Learn how to create silk paper and discover ideas for making your own books.
The tools and materials for making your own handmade paper from pulp are included in Crafts > Paper Crafts >. You can make your own sheets of paper using recycled paper, cotton linters or recycled cotton sheeting, processed plant fibres and plants from the garden, onion skins and many other cellulose materials. The techniques for creating the pulp will vary slightly depending on which material chosen plus whether you wish to include a pigment for colouring the paper or a filler such as china clay for improving the smoothness of the finished sheet.
To make the sheet of paper you will need a mould and deckle. A mould and deckle is made from two frames. The mould part has a mesh stretched taut and flat across one side of the aperture. The deckle is placed on top of the mould so that when the mould and deckle are used to scoop up the loose pulp (slurry) the water drains away through the mesh and the deckle helps to define edges of the paper (hence the term deckled edge).
