Silver Clay Books

Learn about the magical properties of silver clay and how to make jewellery from it.

This selection of books include instructions on how to get the best from the precious silver clay, how it can be fired and how to achieve the best surface finish.

You will find project ideas and inspiration for using silver clay to make special handmade jewellery out of pure silver.

Don't let the idea of having to fire silver clay put you off from having a go! There are three methods for firing the clay and the following summarises the procedures:

  • Gas Hob Firing: The simplest method and requiring the least amount of tools is the stove top method of firing. This can be carried out by placing the dried silver clay (up to 30g in weight) on a stainless steel mesh placed over the flame on a gas ring. The silver is fired on the hottest part of the mesh and when the binder residue has burned away it will glow orange. Fire for 5 minutes.
  • Blowtorch Firing: Place the dried Art Clay Silver piece (up to 25g in weight) onto a fibre brick on a ceramic tile or in a heat proof pan. Ignite the torch and adjust flame to yellow then to blue. Set the flame to a 45° angle and direct the flame at the silver clay item. Once the binder residue has burned away it will glow orange and then white. Keep the flame in place for 1-2.5 minutes (depending on the size of the piece).
  • Kiln Firing: It is not essential to use a kiln although it does enable you to fire larger silver clay items or more than one item at a time. It also allows you to fire pieces with core materials such as cork clay and artificial fireable gemstones. If you want to invest in a kiln it will need to have a thermostat so that the temperature can be held at the right level for the required time. The Prometheus Pro1 kiln (which is available from this website) is a perfect choice for firing Art Clay Silver clay and can also be used for enamelling, fusing glass and annealing metals.
