Tools and materials for creating the ancient crafts of Batik and Shibori. Here you will find a choice of waxes and resists, tjantings, dyes, fabrics and dissolvable yarn. The thermostatically controlled Wax Melting Pot complements the range of Batik products and offers a safe alternative to melting batik wax on the hob. The selection of stretcher frames provide the perfect tool for suspending taut fabric while you are working on your Batik designs, and the fine pins have been designed not to mark the fabric.
Buy indigo dyes, which include natural indigo, synthetic indigo and Jacquard Pre-reduced indigo, to create authentic Japanese shibori patterning, or expand the palette and order the Procion MX cold water dyes for complex Batik designs and tie-dye. The water soluble yarn will make light work of Shibori projects. It is 90 denier so will not leave marks on the fabric and dissolves fully in water at 70°C.
In addition to the range of dyes, there are a choice of fluid silk paints which include Deka Silk, Javana, Setasilk and Dye-na-flow. These can be found in the Silk Painting section of the website and provide the Batik artist with an alternative method of adding colour to their work. The paints are suitable for use on most fabrics and can be heat-set with an iron. As opposed to dyes, the paints do contain a small amount of binder which will slightly affect the handle and drape of the fabric.
You will also find a selection of fabrics including silk and finely woven Javanese cotton which have the ideal surface for fine Batik work and Shibori designs. There are undyed scarves, ties and cushion covers in Pongee and Habotai silk. These silk fabrics have a smooth finish and the light reflective qualities associated with silk fabric. The silks are also sold by the metre and available in 11 metre rolls, plus larger value rolls for classes and workshops.
