Fabric dyes in a water dissolvable package! No more need for mess, these neat little sachets of dye produce brilliant colours on natural fabrics. Suitable for dyeing cotton, canvas, linen, silk, rayon and other natural fibres (we recommend Acid dyes for superior results on Silk, Wool and other protein fibres). Bring new life to faded fabrics (remembering that final colours will be affected by the base colour, see Jacquard Colour Remover) or experiment with different dyeing techniques. Each packet contains enough dye powder to dye 1-1.3kg of dry fabric.
These dyes for natural fabrics can also be used in the same dye bath as Jacquard iDye Poly to dye fabrics made from a polyester blend or where polyester thread has been used for the stitching. Choose a colour of iDye Poly closest to the iDye for Natural Fabrics colour, or opt for a completely different colour to create interesting contrasts!
Instructions for Jacquard iDye for Natural Fabrics: Stove Top
- Fill a stainless steel or enamel pan* with enough warm water for the fabric to move freely. Turn heat onto a medium temperature.
- Remove the soluble dye packet from the cardboard packaging and add it to the water and stir until fully dissolved.
- If dyeing cotton, linen or rayon, dissolve 270g of salt** in a jug of hot water and add to the dye bath. If dyeing silk, add 80ml of white vinegar to the dye bath (instead of salt) and avoid pouring directly onto fabric.
- Ensure materials have first been prepared for dyeing. Pre-wet your materials and add them to the dye bath before raising the temperature to a simmer, just below boiling (85°C).
- Maintain simmer and stir frequently for 30 minutes.
- Turn off the heat and remove the fabric from the dye bath, taking care to avoid scalds. Wear gloves as the residual dye can stain skin.
- Wash the fabric with a mild detergent in cool water and dry.
*Do not use utensils and pans that have been used for dyeing for food preparation.
**Jacquard recommend using non-iodized salt. This is widely available in the UK, check the packet ingredients to ensure iodine is not listed.
Instructions for Jacquard iDye for Natural Fabrics: Front Loading Washing machine
Please note that Jacquard iDye Poly are not suitable for use in a washing machine
- Remove the soluble dye packet from the cardboard packaging and dissolve it in approximately 500ml of hot water.
- Dissolve one cup of salt in approximately one litre of hot water if dyeing cotton, linen or rayon. If you are dyeing silk, use 80ml of white vinegar instead of non-iodized salt. Note: For front loading machines with a pre-wash flush, add dye between the flush and wash cycles.
- Pour the dissolved iDye for Natural Fabrics and dissolved salt or vinegar into the bottom of the washing machine tub and add pre-wetted fabric.
- Set the washing machine to the hottest possible water temperature and longest possible wash cycle. If you are able to extend the wash cycle, do so. The longer the fabric remains in the wash/dye cycle, the darker the colour and the better the fixation.
- When the machine has completed the wash cycle allow it to complete the rinse and spin cycle.
- Wash the garment with a mild detergent in cold water and dry. Note: It is recommend to thoroughly clean washing machines after using it to dye fabric. Referring to the Washing Machine Users Manual should help with cleaning instructions.
