The Jacquard Procion MX Ice Dyes have been specifically designed for the ice dyeing technique (see our Blog post which shows ice dyeing using single colour Ice Dyeing). The colour options Black Opal, Meteorite, Nebula, Poinsettia, Rainforest and Spumoni, are made up from a blend of different colours which separate out and move around the fabric as ice melts. Imagine the folded fabric as a mountain range; the peaks will dye a different colour than the valleys, and you will see a beautiful stratification of different colours in between. Expect random patterning with every project!
Simply soak the fabric in a solution of soda ash, wring it out and tie, fold or scrunch it up, then place it in a colander or on a rack (to allow the melted solution to drain through) and cover it in ice or snow. Sprinkle the dye powder over the ice and allow it to melt overnight into a sink or a water-tight container such as a bucket. Make sure it is warm enough to melt! Rinse and wash the fabric 24-48 hours later.
These Procion MX fibre reactive dyes are suitable for cellulose fibres including cotton, linen, canvas, hemp, jute, ramie, sisal, paper, rayon and more. Be aware that some garments are constructed using synthetic threads which will not take up the colour from Procion MX dyes; we advise that you check labels in clothing before starting a project.
