The Louet Standard Drum Carder with 72 tpi Fine carding cloth. These robust drum carders have a fine clothing, made from nickel-plated steel wire, for preparing and blending a range of fibre for spinning and felt making. The drum carder weighs 7.5kg and has a 19cm wide drum with a speed ratio of 9:1. The enclosed gear system prevents fibres getting caught up in the mechanism.
The fibres are fed a small amount at a time into the drum carder from the top, taking care not to feed in too much at a time (up to 80g for this drum carder). When the depth of the combs are covered and the turning of the handle becomes heavier, stop adding fibres.
To remove the batt, run the doffer pin under the fibres and along the seam of the drum. Carefully lift away the fibres, slowly turning the drum in the opposite direction.
The drum carder is made from waterproof birch and has a hard white coating which is easy to wipe clean and gives the drum carder a modern, contemporary look and feel. The Louet Drum Carder is delivered fully assembled and comes with a cleaning brush, doffer pin, table clamps and an instruction manual. It also includes the useful carding booklet written by textile artist Deb Menz.
