A beautiful deep, rich Madder pink coloured Merino wool fibre for felt-making, spinning and other textile projects
Dyed Merino wool tops, specially prepared for excellent felting and fine-spinning
These fine dyed wool tops felt easily with little effort. Merino wool works well with both needle-felting and wet-felting techniques. The wool roving can be spun into a fine yarn on its own, or blended with other fibres such as Mulberry silk. Use for textile craft projects such as chunky arm knitting; split the roving along its length for a more manageable thickness, and knit away with a slight twist of the roving with each stitch.
The range of colours can be blended using hand carders to extend the palette still further for felt makers and hand spinners.
Super-soft Merino 64s wool tops, 23 microns, with a fibre length of 7–8cm. 100g of wool fibre will make a square of felt approximately 30cm wide. Recommended felting needle size: 38 gauge.
What is Felting and How Do You Do It?
There are a number of blog posts on the George Weil website designed to get you started with felt-making using wool. This post, Caterpillar Made from Felted Balls, provides step-by-step instructions on how to make balls out of felt. These balls are fun to make with all the family and fairly simple to master. Felt balls can be used to make beads, toys, doll heads, and much more. The technique is easy to adapt for making elongated shapes out of wool fibre too.
The popular craft of needle felting is explained in this blog post, Felt Making Using Felting Needles. The technique is very versatile for shaping wool and other fibres into three-dimensional objects. The fox below was felted using dyed Merino wool tops in tan, black and natural undyed.
We do try to ensure that the colours are consistent and repeatable, although there may be a slight variation between dye batches. Our photographs are provided as an indication of colour, and we have tried to match these as closely to the product as possible. You will note that colours will appear differently from monitor to monitor and depending on your lighting conditions.
