Learn how to make handmade paper from the Papermaking Explorer Pack which includes materials, a mould and deckle and instructions 'Papermaking for the Terrified'. The Silk Papermaking Explorer Pack is a joy for the experimental textile artist. The finished paper can be used to add texture and interest to mixed media designs and is receptive to stitch.
Once you have learned the technique of making a handmade paper from our Papermaking kit you may wish to explore other methods of making paper. A simple 'paper' can be created by laying out either silk or plant cellulose fibres in 3 or 4 different layers of perpendicular rows between two sheets of mesh fabric. An acrylic based silk paper medium or CMC paste is then applied through the mesh with a sponge to wet the fibres with the solution. When the solution is dry, the mesh sheets are removed and the layers of fibres are bonded from the dried medium. The silk paper medium creates a slightly more crispy sheet of paper but offers some protection against moisture. A paper made from CMC is much softer but has slightly less integrity. The papers can be used for paper craft projects such as scrapbooking and they are ideal for embroidery techniques.
Using a similar method as papier mache you can also create 3d objects with absorbent fibres using either the CMC or silk papermaking medium.
We also include here dried skeleton leaves in assorted packs for art and craft projects. The leaves can be glued to the surface and painted over with a varnish to seal them in place or they can be used as a mask for creating detailed cyanotype prints or Solarfast prints on finely woven silk fabric. The leaves can also be included in the surface of handmade papers to add texture and interest. Choose from natural, a selection of bold colours or from the painted leaves in silver or gold. Please note that as the skeleton leaves are a natural product they will vary in size and shape.
