The precious metal silver clays from Art Clay Silver. These clays consists of finely ground pure silver mixed with non-toxic binders and water. When kiln, torch or stove-top fired, the binders burn away leaving pure, 99.9% silver and the resulting pieces can be hallmarked. On our website you will find a range of firing tools, pure silver jewellery findings and fireable gem stones. The Art Clay Silver 950 Clays contain 95% silver and 5% copper (as opposed to 92.5% silver and 7.5% alloy in sterling silver). They can be used to create finer jewellery than the other Art Clay Silver Clay types and produce a harder, enriched silver which can be hallmarked sterling silver. These clays need to be fired in a temperature controlled electric kiln only.
Ashford

Ashford products are manufactured in New Zealand, with the first spinning wheels made in 1940, to an original design, for spinning knitting yarn for socks and caps for the country’s soldiers to wear. Caran d’Ache

Based around graphite, which is the key ingredient of pencils and can be found in the Swiss Alps, Caran d’Ache was established in Geneva in 1915. Nine years later, in the hands of its founder, it took the nom-de-plume of a famous illustrator, Caran d’Ache. The business has grown over the years and is now best known for the coloured pencils which are available in almost every colour and every grade of finish. Daler Rowney

The Rowney brothers first opened their business premises in 1783 and started out selling perfumes and powders. By 1837, under the founder’s son they had concentrated their activities on producing artists’ colours using their skills in selecting the best pigments and binders to the leading artists of the time. In 1963, Rowney was the first manufacturer in Europe to introduce a brand of artist quality paint using an acrylic based binder to support a high quality colour, and using the brand name Cryla. Derwent’s long established products are the colour pencil range, Artist. Originally the range covered 24 colours which expanded to 72 colours in 1939 to 120 in 1996. Holding on to tradition Derwent still produce two classic collections, the Studio and Watercolour pencils which are available in the 72 original colours. A full colour range of Pastel pencils were introduced in 1994 in 90 colours. Finally to complete the range they now manufacture ordinary soft stick pastels used for creating broad sweeps of colour. Derwent Signature is a range of lightfast pencils, available in 60 colours. A new 72 colour ranges include Derwent Coloursoft and Derwent Inktense pencils. George Weil supplies a range of synthetic and naturally occurring dyes as well as pigmented paints for colouring the fabrics, yarns and fibres used by textile artists and students. Each dye type may also need a mordant or assistant to improve its effectiveness in creating a wash and light fast colour. The fabric paints and printing inks use a pigment mixed in a binder which fixes to the fabric surface. The paints are available for setting with a household iron or air drying. FIMO is a plastic compound with a wide range of uses, from play material for children, jewellery from craftsmen to professional model making for architects, designers and miniaturists. After hardening in a domestic oven at temperatures of 110°C (230°F) for about 30 minutes, FIMO clay becomes solid and robust, capable of withstanding the knocks of daily life or ready for further working by drilling, sanding and filing. Steam-Set Dyes are chosen by artists for the rich colours which they bring to painting on silk fabric whilst the ‘hand’ and the texture and finish of the silk remain unchanged by the colour which has been applied. The H Dupont Classique Dyes are created specifically for painting on silk and can be used with all silk painting techniques. The dyes are set into the silk fibres by heating at steam temperature after the dye is dry. In the steaming process, the dyes form a chemical bond locking the dyes to the silk fibres and become permanent. H Dupont dyes were first produced in the 1950’s and are well-known around the world. Felt Hats have traditionally been hand formed on a wooden, head sized and shaped, block. These are expensive and heavy to handle. The less professional way has been to work around household bowls or balls. Hat Shapers replace these and are extremely economical. They have been designed for animal fibre, and work wonderfully well with wool using wet manipulation, and “steam and heat” hat felting Hat Shapers are made from strong lightweight ABS plastic, the sort also used in vast quantities for forming internal automotive and caravan panels. The Howard Brush Hand Cards which are offered by George Weil & Sons are designed for preparing wool fibres for spinning and felting and are made for us in York, USA by the world’s leading manufacturers. We selected the Howard Brush carders as the best available since the correct design of the card cloth is fundamental to all carding, whether by hand or on huge industrial machines. The wire must have a special foundation, as it is the backbone of the card clothing. Howard Brush have their own design of foundation. Each ply of cloth uses long staple cotton, double carded yarns, along with specially prepared warp and woollen weft threads. The cloth then is glued and given a rubber coating to protect the cloth. All of this requires a fineness of skill and technique that can only come through accumulated experience. Jacquard is the main brand name of Rupert, Gibbon & Spider, Inc. based in California, USA. The business was created by the Katz family and, like so many craft supplies businesses was first based in their garage. By the 1990’s they were manufacturing art supplies using the brand name, Jacquard Products. Red Label Silk Colour dyes were Jacquard’s first product and were designed for silk painters. Jacquard has continued to expand the product lines with ranges including Dye-Na-Flow, Lumiere and Neopaque fabric paints. Jacquard Procion MX and Jacquard Acid Dyes are popular with hand dyers, while iDye, a powder dye in a dissolvable pack, has been formulated dyeing polyester and other synthetics. Jacquard Pearl Ex Powdered Pigments are fine glistening mica powders for use in viscose mediums such as resin, lacquer, varnish and binders, and Jacquard SolarFast dyes work with sunlight to produce “cyanotype” blue print effects – but in a range of different colours!

The Javana product range which is sold by George Weil in the UK is made by C Kreul GmbH in Germany. Kreul was founded near Nuremburg in 1838 to manufacture artist’s oil colour paints where it remained pre-eminent for over 100 years. Since that time and increasingly over the past 20 years the business has extended their production to include many decorative products and is particularly noted for the quality of their silk paints and Gutta outliners. DYES & Dye Assitants

A vast resource for dyers, this section contains textile dyes, mordants and chemicals for all fibres and dyeing techniques, including Batik, Natural Dyeing and Discharge Dyeing. The dye you order should be determined by the fibre content of the material you wish to dye plus the technique you will be using. You will find here fibre reactive Procion MX dyes for cellulose fibres such as cotton, viscose and linen, as well as the protein silk. These dyes are used in cold water and especially useful for Batik and other resist techniques. The Acid Dyes which work best on protein fibres such as silk and wool, and some synthetics such as nylon, also include the liquid H Dupont Classique Steam Fix dyes which are used by silk painters and batik artists. There are also the Acid Discharge dyes, which can be removed from fabric with discharge paste, and the Acid Illuminating dyes which can be combined with the discharge paste to replace the colour removed. Acid dyes require a hot water dye bath, as do the general purpose Deka L direct dyes. Order silk fabrics for silk painting, printing, and Shibori, finely woven cotton for screen printing or Batik, or polyester for disperse dyeing and heat transfer prints from this selection of materials. These undyed fabrics are priced per metre length and when more than one metre is ordered the fabric will be delivered in one continuous length. The width of the fabrics vary from 90cm to 150cm depending on the fabric. There is also a choice of fabrics on the roll to cater for classes and workshops. The silk fabrics include the smooth, finely woven Pongee and Habotai which are ideal for silk painting and Shibori, the Gauze Chiffon which can be used when felting wool to make Nuno felted fabric, the Crepe de Chine which is woven from high twist silk yarns to create a flexible fabric with a soft drape, and the tactile Noil Poplin and Noil Gauze fabrics woven from the remaining fibres from silk cocoon carding. FELT MAKING Tools

Felt can be created with the minimum of tools using the wet felting method. The tools in this section have been selected to help the felt maker speed up the process and to explore the different felt making techniques. A felting needle is very sharp, with tiny notches cut near the tip of the shaft. They are cut at an upward angle, so that fibres catch in the notches, and carry into the mass. When the needle is retracted, the fibres stay in place. With each stab of the needle, the fibres become more and more entangled and compressed. A felting needle can be used to sculpt 3 dimensional shapes such as animals and flowers, and to add detail to faces. These felting needles are available in packs of 10. Gilding is the application of metal leaf, particularly pure gold, or metallic powders to the surface of an object to give the appearance of solid gold. As pure gold does not react to oxygen it will not tarnish or rust. The application of gold leaf has been used for centuries to embellish decorative objects such as picture frames, furniture and mirrors as well as architectural features such as decorative plaster on ceilings. It is also used on the reverse of glass (Verre Églomisé), in calligraphy illumination, on signage, and in fine art.
