A shuttle box is fitted at either end of the beater. A mechanism in the box is put in motion by a cord and handle, which strikes the fly shuttle so that it passes through the shed from one side of the loom to the other.
The shed is altered and the fly shuttle device passes the shuttle back in the direction it came.
This enables the weaver to speed up the weaving and to produce a more uniform cloth.
