50 metre / 100g hank of hand spun yarn made from recycled sari silk and silk production “waste” – each hank is unique and will vary in colour, the amount of twist, gauge and texture. Spun on drop spindles by women from co-operatives, these special yarns contribute to local industry and help to reduce waste from the production and weaving of silk saris. We will try to match hanks as closely as possible where more than one hank is ordered. Weight and length are approximate, please allow for variations in this hand made product.
We have all had a look at the yarns which have an intentionally hand-spun look, quite erratic in grist. At first sight this looks to range from Aran to double knit, slubby with quite a hard twist. It is strong enough to use as a warp, but being slubby will need some care in winding on.
In weaving terms it comes out at 5dpi sett for a plain weave, which is the range quoted for Aran.
