Fibrecrafts Natural Dye Kit
The Fibrecrafts Natural Dye Kit is an ideal introduction to natural dyeing. Learn how to colour your own wool and silk fibres, yarns and fabrics using traditional natural dyes and discover the wide range of colours that can be achieved from nature.
This comprehensive kit includes 50g each of Alkanet, Elderberries, Logwood, Marigold and Turmeric Natural Dyes, together with Alum, Iron, Copper and Tin Mordants, 100g Cream of Tartar, a 100g hank of wool yarn, and full instructions to help you get started. The selection of mordants provides plenty of opportunities for experimenting with colour modification and expanding the palette produced by each natural dye.
As a general guide, fibres mordanted with Alum are likely to produce the following colours. The notes in italics suggest just a few of the additional shades that can be achieved by experimenting with the mordants included in the kit:
- Alkanet – Greys to purples – can shift towards wine reds with Cream of Tartar.
- Elderberries – Purples – may shift towards pinks with Citric Acid (or white vinegar).
- Logwood – Greys to purples – can produce dark greys and near blacks with Iron Mordant.
- Marigold – Bright yellows – can shift towards ochre and olive green with Copper Mordant.
- Turmeric – Bright golden yellow – can produce warmer yellow tones with Cream of Tartar and yellow-greens with Iron Mordant.
The Fibrecrafts Natural Dye Kit has been tried and tested for over 30 years and remains one of George Weil’s most popular products. Contents may occasionally vary slightly.
