Natural Indigo Dye Powder. This ancient, highly prized dyestuff produces the familiar and beloved indigo blue used for traditional Japanese Shibori techniques, Batik work, and for dyeing denim jeans fabric. Unlike standard fabric dyes, indigo requires a unique vat dyeing process that relies on oxidation, making it one of the most exciting and rewarding textile arts to master.
Why Natural indigo dye is Unique:
- The Magic of Oxidation: When you first dip your fabric into the dye vat, it will appear a pale, yellowish-green. As soon as you lift the fabric into the air, oxygen reacts with the dye, magically turning it into the deep, rich indigo blue before your eyes!
- Versatile & Lived-in: Natural indigo ages beautifully. Because it bonds to the fibres on the surface rather than penetrating entirely, it fades softly over time, giving denim and cotton that classic “lived-in” look.
- Fibre Suitability: It is highly effective on natural fibres including cotton, linen, hemp, viscose, silk, and wool.
What You Need to Get Started:
Indigo dye can produce intense and satisfying results. We include our tried and tested indigo dye recipe here. Please note that for the dye vat process, you will require additional chemicals, specifically Thiourea Dioxide and Soda Ash.
