Silk Carrier Rods are a by-product of silk yarn spinning. These split tubes of silk waste product are created during the unwinding of the cocoon and still contain the sericin glue. This ‘glue’ can be activated by spraying the Silk Carrier Rods with water and ironing flat between sheets of paper to create a silk base – perfect for stitch or spraying/painting with Deka Silk or Jacquard Dye-na-flow paints. The rods can be gently teased apart to show an interesting criss-cross weave of fibres which can be used to great effect in silk papermaking.
These unusual ‘fingers’ of silk fibre can also be dyed in any combination of colours using either Acid dyes or H Dupont Dyes (see our Blog post for microwave dyeing using Acid dyes). The dye colours enhance the sheen of the silk fibre.
Use the Mulberry Silk Carrier Rods in embroidery, hand-dyeing, silk paper making, jewellery making and felting.
Rods are approximately 4 – 6 inches (10–15cm) long and come in a natural off-white colour with darker flecks.
